Il Cinema Ritrovato is a festival that presents a selection of restored films from the Cineteca di Bologna in Europe. Now in its fourth year, the free festival runs from Monday to Wednesday this week at Loyola Marymount University. The opening night film (Monday at 6 p.m.) is the extended version of the gangster classic Once Upon a Time in America with Robert DeNiro and James Wood. The screenings continue with films from Satyajit Ray, Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini and Stig Björkman.

Restoration has saved many great films that would have otherwise disintegrated and disappeared. Each summer in Italy, Cineteca di Bologna presents an eight-day “cinema ritrovato” festival of early silent film, restored films and director portraits. At SFTV, we believe the best way to honor the invaluable contribution of restoration work is through the exhibition and viewing of these great films. In this light, the film school is delighted to offer our students and community the opportunity to see a selection of restored works from recent festivals on the large screen. Join us!

The extended version of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America, restored by the Bologna Cineteca and unveiled at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, features an additional 25 minutes of footage that was cut during editing in 1984. The last labor of his career, Leone’s magnificent portrait lights up the screen with its larger-than-life celebration of America and its cinema. This epic gangster story is about friendship, love, betrayal, history, class, memory and time. Musical score by 2016 Academy Award-winning composer (The Hateful Eight) Ennio Morricone.

Restored in 2012 by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory in association with Andrea Leone Films, The Film Foundation, and Regency Enterprises. Funded by Gucci and The Film Foundation.
